In the words of Inc. Magazine “Web Summit is the largest technology conference in the world”. Forbes says Web Summit is “the best tech conference on the planet”, Bloomberg calls it “Davos for geeks”, Politico “the Olympics of tech”, and the Guardian “Glastonbury for geeks”.
Whatever Web Summit is, it wouldn’t be possible without an incredible team of nearly 200 employees based in Dublin, Lisbon, Toronto and Hong Kong; including world class engineers, data scientists, designers, producers, marketers, salespeople and more. They’ve disrupted an old industry by building incredible software and designing mind-blowing events - revolutionising how people and ideas come together to change the world.
As one of the world’s largest gatherings of entrepreneurs, investors multinationals and thought leaders - over 120,000 people from more than 170 countries join Web Summit in Lisbon, Collision in Toronto, RISE in Hong Kong.
For the first time ever, Web Summit attendees have the option of leaving their banknotes and coins behind. A three-year partnership with Portugal’s leading payments service provider, SIBS, has enabled electronic payment options across the entirety of this year’s conference.
SIBS will provide secure payment solutions for all vendors at the event, with systems that accept all types of digital payments and solutions, including card and mobile app payments.
The Minister of Economy, Pedro Siza Vieira, states that “this partnership allows us, once more, to position Portugal as an innovative country that continues reinforcing the focus on the digitalisation of its economy”. “The opportunity to showcase our technological innovation in an event with such high international visibility, and the association with such a strong brand as Web Summit, offers Portuguese cashless technology a great reputation. At the same time, I hope it encourages a greater penetration of digital payments in our economy” he states.
“With the world becoming ever more cashless, Web Summit is keen to move forward and build a smoother payments experience for our attendees. We’re delighted to be partnering with SIBS on this journey. Both the Web Summit and SIBS teams are delighted to be working on this project together over the next three years.” - says Paddy Cosgrave, Web Summit CEO and founder.
Alongside being the cashless event partner, SIBS will also be accreditation partners over the next three years.
“SIBS has been Web Summit’s partner since its first edition in Portugal and we’re really proud to see this connection strengthened. The future of payments is digital and, as a highly digital country, we keep our focus to make cashless societies. It is a strategy with clear benefits for the national economy that needs to be reinforced. In an event so focused on technology and innovation, it makes perfect sense for cashless payments to be a reality” - says Madalena Cascais Tomé, SIBS’ CEO.
Founded in 1983, SIBS provides financial, modern, reliable and secure services, particularly in the payments’ area, to more than 300 million users from different geographies, processing more than 3 billion transactions annually. Alongside being a major payment processor in Europe, SIBS is a benchmark in security and anti-fraud solutions and services in business process outsourcing and the Iberian leader in card production and personalisation.
SIBS was born and grew up as a fintech, innovating and taking technology as its driver in this path. SIBS reinvented the existing payment methods and created MB WAY, Portugal's most modern and complete payment app, which allows users to make purchases, instant transfers and withdrawals using the mobile phone only. It’s also the company responsible for the management of the ATM Express and MULTIBANCO Networks, the largest Portuguese ATM network, to which SIBS has added dozens of features, many of them pioneer worldwide. In parallel, SIBS manages multiple digital payment channels, from Automatic Payment Terminals, to online channels or mobile phones.
It is also an important international player, present in several markets, namely in Europe and Africa, where SIBS solutions operate in more than 330 thousand terminals that process around 2 billion transactions, especially in Poland, where SIBS owns Paytel, one of the most dynamic payment terminal operators in that market.
Committed in its daily work, SIBS is constantly pursuing its mission of being the reference partner of public and private entities, creating value for society through the development and management of payment solutions, processes and related services based on technology that combine safety, convenience and innovation, respecting the good behavioral principles and the sustainability conditions.
